FAQs

Does Silver Hills make any gluten-free products?

Silver Hills is absolutely thrilled to say that we now offer two breads in the gluten-free variety—Chia Chia and Mack’s Flax. We spent quite a bit of time and energy perfecting the recipe and baking facilities to create these two gluten-free products and are proud of how they turned out! Click here to find out where you can get them.

Are Silver Hills breads suitable for people with celiac disease?

Yes, our new tasty and wholesome Chia Chia and Mack’s Flax gluten-free breads are very suitable for people living with celiac disease.

Do your breads contain peanuts or other nuts?

While some of our breads and bagels may have a nutty flavor, none of our products contain any nuts. A word of warning though, our bakery does in fact stock nuts, soy and sesame seeds, so we’re not a nut-free facility.

Do you sell sprouted grain flour?

As much as we’d like to spread the goodness of sprouted grain even further, we can’t because we don’t actually make flour from our sprouted grains. Instead, we grind the freshly sprouted grain directly in with the other ingredients to maximize the freshness, flavor and nutrients baked into each loaf of bread.

Does Silver Hills use genetically modified ingredients?

Not on your life, or anybody else’s for that matter. Silver Hills is passionate about keeping genetically modified organisms out of our products, demonstrated by our association with the Non-GMO Project. Our grains, like the rest of the ingredients we use, are certified non-GMO and can be easily traced back to the Canadian farms they came from. We are also a certified organic production facility by QAI (Quality Assurance International), which means we can’t (and wouldn’t) even think about bringing any genetically modified organisms into our bakery.

Does Silver Hills have low-salt or no-salt breads?

We don’t offer any sodium-free breads, however, we do offer a few low-sodium varieties (with 140 mg or less per serving), including The Big 16, The King’s Bread and Steady Eddie.

Does Silver Hills have any low glycemic index (GI) breads?

Our Mack’s Flax and Steady Eddie breads have been tested at Glycemic Index Laboratories and make the grade as low GI products. In fact most of our breads rank between 45 and 60 on the glycemic index, while breads made with flour tend to produce a GI rating between 100 and 110, giving our breads, on average, a 40% lower GI rating over flour-based bread.
For more info on all things GI, check out the Canadian Diabetes Association website.

Is Silver Hills vegan?

All of our breads and bagels are vegan-friendly, meaning they do not contain any dairy or other animal products. As for our employees, while we can’t speak for everyone, Stan, Kathy and Brad, the founders and owners of Silver Hills Sprouted Bakery, are vegan. A choice they’ve made based on the belief that it’s a better lifestyle choice for their health as well as the health of the environment.

Freshness—What is the shelf life of Silver Hills products?

Remember, we don’t use preservatives, so we recommend you eat or share your Silver Hills products within seven days of baking (the expiry date can be found on the closure tag). But to maximize shelf life, it’s best to store our breads and bagels in a cool place, like the fridge, or even the freezer if the bread isn’t going to be consumed right away.

What does Silver Hills do to ensure high product quality?

We take quality seriously and do everything we can to make sure our breads and bagels are always as fresh, wholesome and delicious as possible. Our grains undergo a thorough sifting, sorting and cleaning treatment, first by the farmer, and then again at our bakery to ensure only the best organic whole grains enter the baking process. But we’re always looking for ways improve and boost the quality of our breads and bagels, so if you have suggestions, please let us know.

Can I order Silver Hills products online?

Soon! In 2012, we’ll be launching phase 2 of our new website which will feature an entire online store where Silver Hills fans throughout Canada and the US will be able to order all of our products online!

What is cultured wheat and why does Silver Hills use it in their products?

Rather than using unhealthy preservatives in our breads and bagels, we use cultured wheat as a natural and healthy way to maintain freshness and prolong the shelf life of our products. Cultured wheat is made using a completely natural fermentation process similar to how natural yogurt is made. This produces a concentration of food grade organic acids that lower the PH of bread and delays the formation of mold. As a completely dairy free process that does not involve any form of animal products, you can rest assured that the use of cultured wheat aligns perfectly with our pledge to being kosher and vegan-friendly.
