Helpful answers
Have a question that’s begging to be answered? We understand. We have questions too, like if bread is square, why do they make sandwich meat round? We haven’t found the reason for that yet. But if your question is about us or our breads, you’ve got a darn good chance of finding your answer below.
Where can I buy your bread?
You’ll find our bread in stores throughout Western Canada (BC and Alberta), plus Washington and Oregon. Find a store near you here.
If you live in the US of A, you can have our breads delivered right to your door by either dropping us an email or giving us a phone call at 1-888-853-6466.
Can you ship Silver Hills’ breads directly to me?
The answer is yes…and no. We can only ship our breads directly to customers in the US right now. Our American customers can have our breads delivered right to their door by either dropping us an email or giving us a phone call at 1-888-853-6466.
For our Canadian customers all we can say is we’re working on it—and we still do love you.

Come visit us at 30971 Peardonville Road in Abbotsford, BC (map here), or drop us a line at (604) 850-5600.
Do you sell sprouted grain flour?
We’d like to spread the sprouted-grain goodness further, but we can’t. That’s because we grind the freshly sprouted grain right in with the other ingredients, which means we don’t make flour from our sprouted grains. Care to see how our bread is made? It’s a good show.
What does “Bread Made Without Flour” mean?
Bread without flour? Isn’t that like chocolate ice cream without chocolate? Not at all. What it means is instead of grinding the life (and much of the nutrition) out of our grains (like happens in most breads) we sprout the grains by growing them for a short time in water—just long enough to get them all excited about sprouting into plants. We then mash this living grain straight into our other ingredients to preserve the nutritional value of the grain. No flour. No worries.
Do you use genetically modified ingredients?
Not on your life, or anybody else’s for that matter. Our grains come from quality farms in Canada and they, like the rest of our ingredients, are certified non-GMO. We are also a certified organic production facility by QAI (Quality Assurance International) which means we can’t (and wouldn’t) even think of bringing any GMO ingredients into our bakery.
Do you have low-salt or no-salt breads?
We do have some low-sodium breads, but we don’t have any sodium-free breads. Our low-sodium breads (with 140 mg or less per serving) are The Big 16, The King’s Kamut, and Steady Eddie.
Do you make any gluten-free products?
No, we don't make any gluten-free products, but as we speak (well, read) we are perfecting a wheat-free bread for the wider market. For now, you can get a sneak taste in our outlet store, or you can have it shipped to you (if you live in the USA). Our wheat free bread is not made in a dedicated gluten-free facility, just so you know.
Do you have any low glycemic index (GI) breads?
We do have two breads that have been tested at GI Laboratories and made the grade as low GI breads. Those would be Mack’s Flax and Steady Eddie.
For a bit more info on all things GI, check these out from the Canadian Diabetes Association: A Glycemic Index pamphlet, Glycemic Index for Nutrition Pros and The Glycemic Index Explained presentation.

Do your breads contain peanuts or other nuts?
Some of our breads may have a ‘nutty flavour’, but none of our varieties contain any nuts. A word of warning, though, that our bakery does in fact have nuts, soy and sesame seeds in it, so we’re not a nut-free facility.
Are your breads OK for people with wheat sensitivities?
It’s interesting…many people with wheat sensitivities find our bread more tummy friendly. Why, you ask? The naturally occurring enzymes in wheat actually thrive in our sprouting process, making gluten easier to digest. FYI The King’s Kamut is the bread with the least amount of wheat. Experiment if you like, but we really recommend that if you have wheat sensitivities, you should first chat with your health care professional before eating any of our tempting baking.
Are your breads OK for people with Celiacs disease?
Our breads are not created for people with Celiacs disease; they contain sprouted wheat and gluten flour. Sorry about that.
How do you recommend storing bread for ideal freshness?
To keep your precious Silver Hills loaf fresh and flavourful for as long as possible, just follow the instructions on the bread bag. Since you probably don’t have the bag right in front of you, it says you should store your loaf between 18°C and 21°C (64°F to 70°F). To keep it longer, just double-bag it and pop it in the freezer.
What is the shelf life of a Silver Hills loaf?
You know that we don’t use preservatives, right? So we recommend you eat or share your Silver Hills loaf within seven days of baking. You can find the expiry date right on the closure tag. We can also tell you that it’s best to store our bread in a cool place, like the fridge or freezer, where it comes out quite nicely after a thaw.
What do you do to ensure high product quality?
Our grains get the full sifting, sorting and cleaning treatment, first by the farmer, and then again here at the bakery. We do everything we can to make sure every loaf arrives in your home as delectable and wholesome as you expect. Of course, we’re also a little obsessed with quality, so we’re always looking for ways to do a better job and boost the quality of our breads and bagels.
Is your product Kosher?
We are happily certified Kosher by BC Kosher.
